Saldanha – home the richest mussel farms (and oyster beds) anywhere on the South African coastline – isn't nearly as pretty as Paternoster, but it's worth a visit if you want to go out to sea on a yacht or want to do some serious fishing.

It's also home to a delightful restaurant – the Slipway Waterfront Restaurant –  which is right in the harbour. The setting is quite gorgeous; you feel as though you are dining with the sailors.

Naturally, a selection of fresh fish is up for grabs. Restaurant hours: Mondays to Sundays - 9:00 onwards (season and client depending.) Breakfasts, morning teas and cakes served until 11:30 am. We reckon that their mussels are fantastic. If you want something different, go for the mussels in bacon. It doesn’t sound good, that much we will concede. But they taste good… and in the world of food, taste is better than sound. Their oysters are also quite sensational. Order a dozen; six will leave you wanting for more.

The restaurant is closed every evening in winter except for block bookings in advance (minimum 30 people). Restaurant bookings: Tel: 022 714 4235
